PRACTICAL WORKSHOP
Experience
Practical application remains central to Mechanical Maintenance Skills – Part 2.
For practical tasks, delegates learn the underpinning theory before watching the instructor demonstrate the activity on a training rig.
Delegates then have the opportunity to practise the task themselves before completing a one-to-one practical assessment.
This structured approach allows delegates to develop their knowledge and skills progressively, moving from understanding how a component or system operates to demonstrating practical competence.
Underpinning knowledge is also assessed through a written paper.

WHAT YOU WILL
Learn
Part 2 combines underpinning mechanical theory with practical activities across a further range of mechanical components and maintenance techniques.
Gears & Gearboxes
Develop knowledge and practical understanding of gears and gearbox systems, including their application within mechanical equipment and the maintenance considerations associated with them.
Couplings & Angular Joints
Develop an understanding of additional methods used to connect and transmit mechanical power, including:
» Angular joints
» Fluid couplings
» Associated mechanical components and applications
Clutches & Brakes
Develop knowledge of mechanical clutches and brakes and their use within machinery and power transmission systems.
Seals
Develop an understanding of seals and their application within mechanical systems, including the considerations involved in their correct use and maintenance.
Installation Methods
Develop practical knowledge of appropriate installation methods when working with mechanical components and equipment.
Lubrication
Develop an understanding of lubrication and its importance within mechanical maintenance, supporting the reliable operation and life of mechanical components.
MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE
Part 2
Mechanical Maintenance Skills – Part 2 builds on the knowledge and practical skills developed in Part 1, progressing into a wider range of mechanical components and maintenance activities.
This four-day course develops practical competence in areas including gears and gearboxes, couplings, clutches and brakes, seals, installation methods and lubrication.
As with Part 1, technical theory is supported by instructor demonstrations and practical workshop activities, allowing delegates the opportunity to practise each task before completing practical assessment.
Part 2 completes MCP's two-part Mechanical Maintenance Skills Programme, building on the skills developed in Part 1 and preparing delegates for the end-of-course exam.
Delegates complete practical activities and assessments as they progress through the programme. Following successful completion of both Parts 1 and 2, delegates undertake an end-of-course exam. Those who successfully pass the exam will be awarded a City & Guilds Accreditation Certificate in Mechanical Maintenance Skills.
WHY LEARN
Mechanical Maintenance Skills
Part 1 establishes practical skills across common mechanical components including power transmission systems, belts, chains, bearings, shafts, alignment, couplings and pumps.
Part 2 builds on this foundation, developing delegates' knowledge and practical capability across further mechanical components and maintenance activities.
The course introduces gears and gearboxes, angular joints and fluid couplings, clutches and brakes, seals, installation methods and lubrication, helping delegates develop a broader understanding of the systems they may encounter within an industrial maintenance environment.
Through practical exercises and assessment, delegates continue to develop the skills required to diagnose and fix routine mechanical faults and undertake appropriate mechanical maintenance tasks.
IS THIS COURSE
Right for You?
Mechanical Maintenance Skills – Part 2 is designed for delegates progressing from Part 1 and looking to develop greater practical mechanical maintenance capability.
It is particularly suitable for:
» Maintenance Technicians
» Mechanical Maintenance Engineers
» Electrical Maintenance Engineers and Technicians developing broader mechanical skills
» Mechanical Fitters developing or refreshing practical skills
» Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineers
» Operators undertaking appropriate mechanical maintenance activities
» Technicians developing broader mechanical competence
» Production personnel developing greater technical capability
» Employers looking to strengthen practical mechanical skills within maintenance and operations teams
WHAT WILL YOU
Be Able to Do?
On successful completion of Part 2, delegates will have developed greater knowledge and practical competence across a broader range of mechanical maintenance activities.
This includes greater confidence in:
» Understanding gears and gearbox systems
» Working with common mechanical transmission components
» Understanding angular joints and fluid couplings
» Understanding the operation and application of clutches and brakes
» Recognising and understanding different sealing applications
» Applying appropriate mechanical installation methods
» Understanding the importance of correct lubrication
» Diagnosing and addressing routine mechanical faults
» Applying practical mechanical maintenance techniques safely and effectively
Together with the skills developed in Part 1, Part 2 completes the Mechanical Maintenance Skills Programme.
CITY & GUILDS
Accreditation
Delegates complete practical activities throughout Part 2, followed by one-to-one practical assessments. Underpinning mechanical knowledge is also assessed through a written paper.
Part 2 is the final stage of the two-part Mechanical Maintenance Skills Programme.
Successful completion of both Parts 1 and 2 leads to a City & Guilds Accreditation Certificate in Mechanical Maintenance Skills.
This provides a recognised conclusion to the structured practical development undertaken across the two-part programme.
