Mechanical to Electrical Training – Part 3
PRACTICAL WORKSHOP
Experience
Part 2 is designed to develop confidence through practical application.
Working with experienced instructors, delegates undertake practical activities involving motors, starters and associated control equipment, putting the principles covered in the classroom into practice.
Practical exercises include:
» Safe isolation procedures
» Preparing and terminating cables
» Wiring electrical circuits
» Connecting industrial plugs and sockets
» Testing completed circuits
» Using electrical testing instruments correctly
» Identifying common electrical components
These exercises help delegates understand how electrical maintenance principles apply to the industrial equipment and systems they may encounter in the workplace.

The course also introduces power factor correction and the theory required to support the practical activities undertaken throughout the four days.
MECHANICAL TO ELECTRICAL
Training
Develop Practical Electrical Maintenance Skills for Industrial Equipment
Mechanical to Electrical Training – Part 2 builds on the electrical knowledge and practical skills developed in Part 1, progressing into three-phase systems, electric motors, starters and motor control.
Designed for maintenance engineers and technicians with a basic understanding of electrical systems, this four-day electrical maintenance training course develops practical skills for working with common industrial motors and associated control equipment.
Through a combination of classroom learning and practical workshop exercises, delegates learn how to connect single and three-phase motors, work with different motor starting methods, carry out three-phase isolation and use electrical test equipment to support maintenance activities.
Part 2 forms the next stage of MCP's four-part Mechanical to Electrical Training Programme and provides the foundation for progression into electrical fault finding and control systems in Part 3.
PROGRESS YOUR
Electrical Maintenance Skills
Part 1 establishes the fundamentals of electricity, safe working, basic circuits and electrical testing. Part 2 takes those skills further by introducing the motors, starters and three-phase systems commonly encountered when maintaining industrial machinery.
Electric motors are fundamental to manufacturing and process equipment. Understanding how motors are connected, protected and controlled gives mechanically biased engineers a broader understanding of the machinery they maintain and helps them develop greater practical electrical maintenance capability.
Part 2 focuses on practical skills including three-phase isolation, motor connections, motor starters and control, overload protection, changing motor direction and selecting replacement motors on a like-for-like basis.
IS THIS COURSE
Right for You?
This course is suitable for:
» Mechanical maintenance engineers progressing through the M2E Programme
» Maintenance technicians with a basic understanding of electrical systems
» Engineers looking to develop practical electrical maintenance skills
» Engineers who need greater knowledge of industrial motors and motor control
» Multi-skilled engineers looking to strengthen their electrical capability
» Experienced mechanical engineers with sufficient existing electrical knowledge to enter the programme at Part 2
» Employers developing broader electrical capability within their maintenance teams
Delegates would normally have completed Mechanical to Electrical Part 1 or have equivalent basic electrical knowledge.
Experienced engineers can begin the programme at Part 2 where they already have the required foundation knowledge, although MCP recommends starting with Part 1 wherever possible to ensure a consistent understanding of electrical fundamentals and safe working practices.
WHAT WILL YOU
Be Able to Do?
By the end of Part 2, you will have developed the knowledge and practical skills to:
» Understand the principles of single and three-phase motor systems
» Carry out three-phase isolation procedures
» Connect single and three-phase motors
» Understand and work with common motor starting methods
» Identify and work with motor overload protection
» Change the direction of single and three-phase motors
» Select replacement motors on a like-for-like basis
» Use electrical test equipment to support maintenance activities
» Understand basic motor control circuits
» Progress to Mechanical to Electrical Training – Part 3
CITY & GUILDS
Accreditation
Part 2 also forms the first stage of the City & Guilds accredited pathway through the Mechanical to Electrical Training Programme. Successful completion of Parts 2, 3 and 4, including passing the final examination, leads to the associated City & Guilds Accreditation.
Throughout the course, delegates complete practical exercises to reinforce and demonstrate the knowledge and skills developed during each session.
Successful completion of Part 2 leads to the award of an MCP Technical Training Certificate.
