About Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Welding Training C&G Level 1

There are many different skills and techniques within the scope of hot working of metals in the broad skill field of welding. Each one of the many and varied welding techniques calls for some specialised skills and knowledge and this three-day practical, hands-on welding course in Aston, Birmingham is designed to give delegates the skills and knowledge they need to produce welded joints using Manual Metal Arc (MMA or stick) welding equipment to satisfy the requirements of City and Guilds level 1.

Is it right for me?

Delegates should be using MMA welding in the workplace and have a basic understanding.  They also will need to have achieved the relevant practical skills or appropriate experience to undertake MMA welding tasks competently and safely to the City and Guilds Level 1 standards.

What will I learn?

During the course the delegates will cover the following subject areas.

  • The process and health & safety requirements for MMA welding

  • Interpreting welding drawing symbols

  • Identifying weld defects

  • Set up of equipment and welding practice

  • Produce beads on plate in the PA flat position

  • Produce a lap fillet weld in the PB horizontal/vertical position

  • Produce a tee fillet weld in the PA flat position

  • Produce a tee fillet weld in the PB horizontal/vertical position

  • Produce a corner weld in the PA flat position

AWT What are the Benefits

The course will raise the delegates’ skill level by the use of practical welding with lectures on:

  • Using the equipment safely and changing parts of the system.

  • Relevant parts of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (COSHH).

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • Basic welder maintenance.

  • Process applications.

This 5-day course has some short classroom sessions to present the underpinning theory of this subject area but is heavily focussed on the practical training in welding techniques.

The delegates are required to produce a welding test piece which is assessed to City and Guilds Level 1 standard by the instructor. They are also to demonstrate that they can set up and operate the MMA Welding equipment safely. On successful completion of the course at the Aston, Birmingham venue, delegates will receive an accredited City and Guilds award, otherwise an MCP Certificate of Attendance will be issued. The content of this course may be used to support NVQ programmes.
