Closing the Skills Gaps
Highlights from Our Latest MCP Workshop in Reading
What happens when you bring together engineering leaders, practical training insights, and a shared challenge that refuses to go away?
You get a room full of honest conversations - and a few lightbulb moments.
That was very much the case at our recent MCP workshop in Reading, where we welcomed professionals from across industry to tackle a familiar issue: maintenance skills gaps, and what to actually do about them.
From Discussion to Practical Action
The workshop focused on how structured, targeted training can directly address these gaps, without disrupting operations or overwhelming teams.
Key themes included:
Identifying real skills gaps (not just assumed ones)
Aligning training with operational goals
Creating progression pathways for engineers
Embedding learning into day-to-day maintenance practices
Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, the emphasis was on tailoring solutions—because no two sites, or teams, face exactly the same challenges.
The Challenge Everyone Recognises (But Few Fully Solve)
Skills shortages in maintenance teams are nothing new. Yet, what stood out during the session was how consistently this challenge is evolving.
It’s no longer just about recruitment.
It’s about:
Bridging the gap between mechanical and electrical competencies
Supporting new managers stepping into leadership roles
Retaining knowledge within teams
And ensuring training translates into measurable performance on site
The conversation quickly moved beyond theory and into practical realities, something we always aim to prioritise.
What Attendees Had to Say
We captured a couple of short conversations with attendees on the day, and the feedback speaks for itself:
Why Workshops Like This Matter
There’s something powerful about stepping away from the day-to-day and having open, honest discussions with peers facing similar pressures.
Workshops like this create space to:
Challenge existing approaches
Share ideas across industries
And leave with clear, actionable next steps
(And, importantly, without adding another 50-slide presentation to your inbox.)
Missed This One? Here’s What’s Next
If you weren’t able to join us in Reading, there’s another opportunity on the horizon.
We’re planning our next MCP workshop in Solihull on 2nd October 2026, where we’ll continue the conversation around closing maintenance skills gaps and improving team capability through effective training.
Spaces will be limited to keep the session focused and interactive.
