PRACTICAL INSPECTION & TESTING
Experience
Practical skills form an important part of MCP's PAT Testing Course.
Delegates gain experience in the practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment, including the use of PAT testing units and separate instruments.
They learn how to carry out appropriate inspections and tests, record the results obtained and interpret those results to determine whether equipment requires further attention.
The combination of underpinning knowledge and practical application helps delegates develop a structured approach to electrical equipment inspection and testing rather than relying on the test instrument alone.

PORTABLE APPLIANCE TESTING
Training
Practical PAT Testing Course for Electrical Equipment
Maintaining electrical equipment in a safe condition is an important responsibility for organisations and those responsible for managing and maintaining workplace equipment.
MCP Technical Training's PAT Testing Course combines theory with practical training to develop the knowledge and skills required to inspect and test electrical equipment safely and competently.
The course covers both the practical and management aspects of Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing, including legislation, equipment classification, inspection frequencies, documentation, instrumentation and the recording and interpretation of results.
Delegates can choose between a one-day course leading to an MCP Technical Training Certificate or a two-day City & Guilds 2377-77 Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing programme.
DEVELOP PRACTICAL
PAT Testing Skills
Effective maintenance of electrical equipment involves more than simply connecting an appliance to a PAT tester.
HSE guidance describes an effective approach as potentially including user checks, formal visual inspections and, where necessary, combined inspection and testing by an electrically competent person. The appropriate frequency of inspection and testing should be based on risk rather than automatically applying the same interval to every item of equipment.
MCP's portable appliance testing training develops delegates' understanding of this wider approach while providing practical experience in inspection and testing.
Delegates learn how to identify equipment classifications, use PAT testing equipment and separate instruments, record and interpret results and understand the documentation and procedures associated with an effective electrical equipment maintenance programme.
IS THIS COURSE
Right for You?
The PAT Testing Course is designed for those involved in the practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment and those responsible for managing testing programmes.
It is particularly suitable for:
» Maintenance Technicians
» Electrical Maintenance Technicians
» Multi-skilled Maintenance Engineers
» Facilities and Maintenance personnel
» Those responsible for inspecting and testing workplace electrical equipment
» Personnel responsible for managing electrical equipment testing programmes
» Organisations looking to develop PAT testing capability in-house
For the City & Guilds programme, delegates must have basic electrical competence demonstrated through MCP's City & Guilds Mechanical to Electrical programme or equivalent, or by successfully completing a pre-course assessment.
WHAT WILL YOU
Be Able to Do?
Following successful completion of the course, delegates will have developed greater knowledge and confidence in Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing. This includes greater confidence in:
» Understanding relevant legislation and responsibilities
» Recognising different equipment classifications
» Carrying out visual inspections
» Understanding appropriate inspection and testing requirements
» Using PAT testing equipment
» Using separate test instruments where appropriate
» Carrying out practical inspection and testing
» Recording test results accurately
» Interpreting inspection and test results
» Following appropriate documentation and procedures
» Understanding the importance of competence
» Supporting an effective electrical equipment maintenance programme
CITY & GUILDS
Accreditation
MCP offers two routes depending on the level of training and certification required.
The one-day course leads to an MCP Technical Training Certificate.
Delegates must successfully complete the two-day programme and pass the required assessment to achieve City & Guilds Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing 2377-77.
Delegates undertaking the City & Guilds programme require basic electrical competence, demonstrated through MCP's City & Guilds Mechanical to Electrical programme or equivalent, or through successful completion of a pre-course assessment.
The existing MCP course also recommends that delegates have an up-to-date copy of the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

FAQs
-
PAT is the commonly used term for the inspection and, where necessary, electrical testing of portable electrical equipment to help determine whether it remains safe for continued use.
-
UK law requires electrical equipment to be maintained so that it remains safe, but it does not prescribe a universal requirement for annual PAT testing. HSE guidance recommends a risk-based approach, using appropriate user checks, formal visual inspection and combined inspection and testing where necessary.
-
There is no single statutory testing interval for all electrical equipment. HSE states that inspection and testing frequency should be determined according to risk, taking into account factors such as the equipment, its use and the environment in which it operates.
-
Yes. The course combines theory with practical inspection and testing, including the use of PAT testing units and separate instruments.
-
MCP offers one-day and two-day options, depending on the certification required.
-
The one-day course leads to an MCP Technical Training Certificate. Delegates who successfully complete the two-day programme and pass the required assessment achieve City & Guilds Electrical Equipment Maintenance and Testing 2377-77.
-
For the City & Guilds programme, delegates require basic electrical competence demonstrated through MCP's City & Guilds Mechanical to Electrical programme or equivalent, or successful completion of a pre-course assessment.
